For centuries, the Indigenous peoples of North America have preserved their stories through art. Art became a means to maintain their culture, as well as their history, as more Native Americans were displaced by colonial expansion.
Native American art is both functional and beautiful, serving as a bridge to Indigenous cultures and offering a unique perspective on their history. These works enrich the lives of all Americans, providing a glimpse into the world from Indigenous viewpoints.
The Blackwing 574 is our tribute to Native American art and to the 574 tribes that use it to ensure their identity. We collaborated with artist Chris Pappan of the Kaw, Osage, and Lakota to design a pencil that exudes the geometric patterns present in many expressions of Native American culture. Each pencil includes hard graphite.
Part of the proceeds from this release will be donated to the Cheyenne River Youth Project and their mission to provide enriched art programs to Lakota youth on the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe reservation.
