Is the soul immortal? With this question, the reader of the Platonic dialogue Phaedo is faced, a reader eager and hopeful to find a convincing answer within the pages of the philosophical text.
The hermetic answer of Plato is framed by an outstanding directorial proposal: The last day of Socrates' life, the friends and students inside the prison, his family, the moment he will drink the hemlock - just as it gets dark -, his last words, and the circle of the Pythagoreans. The latter could not be absent from the On the Soul Platonic dialogue.
Plato entrusts the narration of the dialogue to a student of Socrates, Phaedon, to convey to us, his skeptical audience, the superhuman effort of a dialectical venture aimed at affirming the eternal existence of the soul.
The four arguments supporting this position each contribute in their own way, but the affirmation comes, to whichever one ultimately arrives, through Socrates' free will on the last day of his life, choosing the immortality of the purified soul.
Plato emphasizes this fact, that Socrates lived as a philosopher a life of moderation and prepared his soul so that it would be capable of passing to the blessed places, where the gods reside. The issue of the care of the soul is closely tied to that of death within the dialogue, while it does not go unnoticed that the soul struggles to free itself from its bodily constraints, which may or may not hinder its journey towards immortality.
The word is now with the reader and his own assessment.
