Description

READERS! THIS BOOK IS NOT A REAL ENCYCLOPEDIA! It is an epic work of fiction that recounts the many adventures of a lonely storyteller on the path of Enlightenment and True Love.

The book contains numerous stories, both short and long, that concern all sorts of things: gods, monsters, mad kings, wise old magpies, wizards, shamans, doctors, brothers, conflicts, mystery, bad science, even worse geography – and did we mention, we already mentioned True Love?

Before our own Story begins, another – now forgotten – civilization thrived. The people who wandered the Old Earth resembled us closely: curious, sensitive, funny, ambitious, and vulnerable.

In this series of illustrated and interconnected stories, Isabel Greenberg chronicles the explorations of a young man who rows from his homeland, the North Pole, to the South. There, he finds his great love, but their romance is doomed. Due to the unusual and difficult polarity of the Old Earth, the lovers cannot touch each other.

Intricate, imaginative, and full of humor, Isabel Greenberg's debut is a welcome addition to a flourishing genre.

Read an excerpt

In the heart of the land of the North, snow and ice never melt. However, if we head further south, we will find ourselves on the Summer Island. There, the temperature is high enough for trees to grow. In winter, as they bend under the weight of snow, they look like a forest of grandfathers; but in summer, they stand upright. The Summer Island is a place with tall pine forests and endless tundra, a clear vast sky, and dark frozen lakes. These lakes, deep and blue and smooth like mirrors, reflect the sky so accurately that if someone tries to look to the bottom, they will feel dizzy.
