Trepilov, an emerging writer, seeks new ways of expression in writing and theater, under the shadow of his mother Arkadina, a renowned actress of the established theater. At his uncle Sorin’s estate, he presents his play with the help of his beloved Nina, an aspiring actress. The performance will end in disgrace.

The spectators of the play, including his mother, will dismiss it and mock his effort. The relationships of the characters will become trapped in dead ends, as Nina decides to follow her dream of becoming a professional actress and falls passionately in love with Trigorin, a well-known writer and Arkadina's favorite.

Two years later, Trepilov watches from afar the life of Nina, a life shattered personally and professionally, while he has managed to become a mediocre writer. The state of his uncle Sorin's health forces Arkadina and Trigorin to return to the estate, while Nina returns, broken and helpless like the dead seagull that Trepilov had laid at her feet years ago.

Feeling betrayed, the former lover of Trigorin visits Trepilov. Once she leaves, a gunshot will be heard from his room. Trepilov has committed suicide...

The writing of "The Seagull" was completed in 1895. It premiered on stage in 1896, and the performance did not resonate, being labeled a failure. In contrast, it was staged again in 1898 at the Moscow Art Theater, directed by K. Stanislavski, where it found success.

This work inaugurated the composition of Chekhovian dramaturgy, where the established central hero is replaced by a group of people, with the action of the play shared among them. The play is neither a comedy nor a drama but a "comedy in four acts," as Chekhov himself said. The play addresses the relationships of everyday people who love, serve, or wish to serve the Art of Theater, love, demand, and strive to overcome the dead ends of their lives.
