The Apocalypse of the World (1969) serves to poetically and politically complement, as the third part, The General Song (1950) and The Heroic Song (1962). Seeds of values and ideas from these two works bear fruit again, but the poet's almost absolute optimism gives way here to inhumanity and the relentless historical events that distort humanity and its inherent ideals, leading to destruction, to the apocalypse of the world.
What Neruda writes in this book he considers as the "duty of the poet of public benefit, namely of the pure poet." Despite the expressed bitterness, he reaffirms his unwavering faith in the communist future of humanity after the end of the age: the awareness of the catastrophic events, by the people who will remain, will lead to a new humanism, to the securing of daily bread for all, to the establishment of joy, to the creative power of love, to the high works of literature and art.
