George Anastasiadis, drawing material and ideas from historical and literary books, from experiences, and from old and contemporary newspapers, traces, preserves, and presents aspects of the multifaceted historical, spiritual, and cultural background of his birthplace.

The volume contains seven essays on historiography: In the first, the "brief" 20th century of the city is explored, and a study guide is proposed for the points from which our knowledge of the historical identity of modern Thessaloniki emanates.

In the other essays, George Anastasiadis approaches:

  • the press of Thessaloniki as a repository of memory
  • the International Fair as it emerges through the pages of History and literature
  • Thessaloniki of the refugees through the eyes of George Ioannou
