This book primarily attempts to read the history of the Greek state within a broader international paradigm of state history. Although this may seem paradoxical, Greek historiography on the state may be quantitatively rich, but it is either characterized by theoretical models that are entirely outdated in the international historical community or continues to be constructed on the basis of a perspective according to which the state is political history, in the sense of event-based history. In this logic, public finances should not be included in the history of the state, nor state policies such as agricultural reforms. It is obvious that such a perception does not take us very far in understanding the history of the state. If, for example, a historian fifty years from now tried to write the history of Greece over the past decade without taking into account the recent ten-year crisis, the result would be weak in every respect. Historical sociology, the example of which is adopted in the texts of this book, sought to avoid these pitfalls, significantly broadening the possibilities of understanding the history of the state internationally. These ten texts therefore aspire to speak about the history of the Greek state with greater consistency and effectiveness than has been the case to date in this field of Greek historiography.
