“Knowing this, I, having seen many places where I have walked, having been sent from the holy Church of God, and wanting to help as much as I can, I took it upon myself and printed this small yet much-needed book on this subject for the simple priests, which we printed in question and answer format, so that it may be heard with more ease. It is also needed for laypeople, since it teaches priests how to confess, how laypeople should confess, how to examine their conscience, how to prepare themselves when they wish to go to their spiritual father, and not to go to the spiritual father at the moment they wish to receive communion.”
With these words, the author captures the purpose of the 1630 edition, which is none other than the systematic organization of the method of the Mystery of Confession. Moreover, during the period we are examining, several spiritual confession manuals were printed and circulated, whose authors aimed at the spiritual guidance of the faithful regarding the method of confession. In these works, the interest focuses on the fact that theology and legalism sometimes conflict and sometimes align. However, this work, although its content resembles the structure and essence of later confession manuals, aimed to convert Orthodox Christians through the Mystery of Confession and their “return” to the Catholic Church.
