The Signare wall tapestry, featuring “Lady & Unicorn Sense Taste,” depicts the sense of taste from the “The Lady and the Unicorn” series. The lady gazes at a parrot perched on her left hand and takes sweets from a dish held by a maid. A lion and a unicorn with banners frame the scene, while a monkey eats a sweet at the lady’s feet.
The series was designed in Paris and woven in Flanders around 1500 AD, at the dawn of the French Renaissance. The six tapestries are on display at the National Museum of the Middle Ages in Paris.
