Appeals to Philhellenes for support of the Struggle, poems praising the bravery of Greeks and Greek women in the great battles of '21, the first Greek play on the theme of the Revolution, specifically the sortie of Messolonghi, the first indirect chronicle of the uprising in Crete, the participation of women in the uprising in various regions, the emergence of female fighters, such as Gouraina, as well as poems celebrating the anniversary in the early years of the free state, constitute some of the thematic political texts, poems, plays or prose by 19th-century Greek women surrounding the major event of the Struggle for freedom.
This anthology is an attempt to highlight the work related to the Revolution of 1821 by those mostly forgotten women, in which their collective consciousness is documented. These texts capture women's heroism in all its forms: heroic fighting, the heroism of victimized women, and the heroism of women who assist behind the lines in the preparation of the Struggle.
The publication is complemented by the biographies of the creators unknown to us today, in an effort to also give voice to their silenced contributions as an important piece in the scholarly discourse of the 19th century.
