Hole saws, also known as core drills and hole cutters, allow for the opening of holes in solid material (steel) without the need for pre-drilling. They are made from high-speed steel (HSS). The holes created with the drill do not require deburring and their smoothness and accuracy are closer to that of a bore than drilling.

Trepanning drills are intended for magnetic base drills. A pilot guide suitable for the type of drill used is required during drilling.
