Description

Description

Suetonius (C. Suetonius Tranquillus, born around 70 AD) was the imperial biographer of antiquity. The son of a military tribune, he initially was a lawyer and a teacher of rhetoric, but later became the private secretary to Emperor Hadrian, 119–121. He dedicated his work "The Lives of the Caesars" to G. Septicius Clarus, the prefect of the guard's presidency. After the dismissal of both men for some breach of court custom, Suetonius appears to have withdrawn and likely continued his writing. Other works of his, many of which are known only by title, have been lost except for a portion of "The Lives of Eminent Men (letters)." A friend of Pliny the Younger, Suetonius was a studious and diligent collector of facts, resulting in the existing biographies of the emperors (including Julius Caesar, the tyrant) up to Domitian being invaluable. His structure in "The Lives of the Caesars" focuses on the emperor's family and early years, public and private life, and death. We encounter many anecdotes, numerous rumors from the imperial court, and various details about character and personal appearance. Suetonius's account of Nero's death is justly famous. The Loeb Classical Library edition of Suetonius is in two volumes.
