Mallow or wild mallow (malva sylvestris) is also known as grape mallow and belongs to the family of Malvaceae. It is a beautiful perennial herbaceous plant with an upright stem and rounded leaves divided into about five lobes. The flower is usually pink with purple rays and consists of five petals.
The laxative properties of mallow have been known since ancient times. Hippocrates recommended it for indigestion and for treating inflammations. In ancient Greece, they cultivated mallow in their gardens and believed it stopped hunger and thirst. It is said that mallow is considered a sacred herb by the Pythagoreans.
The plant contains flavonoids, mucilage, anthocyanins, plant mucus, essential oil, and traces of tannins. It has soothing, anti-inflammatory, detoxifying, diuretic, and expectorant properties.
