In our country, it is known as wild cardamom. It grows abundantly everywhere, in barren lands, embankments, etc. It is an annual plant, and its upright stems can reach up to 50 centimeters in height. The leaves are small, gray-green with various shapes. The flowers are white and small. Its fruits are triangular, broad, and cupped. It blooms from December to January. In many parts of the world, the capsule is considered an edible vegetable.
The herb has been known since antiquity and was widely used during the Middle Ages. Seeds have been found in the stomachs of people from Tolunidis (500 BC – 500 AD) and in excavations at Catalhoyuk (Turkey 5950 BC). It is the "Thlaspi" of Dioscorides, who used it as a remedy for hemoptysis. Culpeper wrote of the herb that if placed on the fruits or soles of the feet, it helps with jaundice.
In the Middle Ages, it was used in folk medicine for problems such as hematuria, hemorrhoids, chronic diarrhea, and dysentery. The herb was also used for rheumatic diseases, uterine problems, various bleeding issues, cramps, and colics. In local applications, it was used for healing in nosebleeds by placing cotton with the juice of the plant inside the nose.
The herb tastes like crucifers. It contains saponins, mustard oil, flavonoids, resin, monoamines, choline, acetylcholine, sitosterol, and vitamins A, B, and C. The flavonoids are primarily composed of Bursin, which stimulates the muscles of the urethra. The leaves contain vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, and C.
It has diuretic properties, and tyramine causes an increase in blood pressure. The capsule is renowned for its hemostatic properties and its astringent effect on the uterus. It is used for problems such as cystitis, urinary tract stone disease, urethral bleeding, hemorrhoids, nosebleeds, hemoptysis, and wounds.
To prepare an infusion, pour a cup of boiling water over 2 teaspoons of the herb and let it steep, covered, for 15 minutes. Strain and drink up to 3 cups a day. To prepare a decoction, boil for 10-15 minutes in water, using 2 teaspoons of the herb for each cup of water.
Warning! The use of the herb is contraindicated in thrombophlebitis, during pregnancy, in cases of heart disease, and thyroid disorders. Overconsumption may lead to undesirable effects.
