Description

Gene Wilder defined comedy in film during the 1970s and 1980s. This book is not a traditional autobiography but a clever, quirky, and humorous review of significant events that influenced his pursuit of love and art.

In this deeply personal and fascinating book, Wilder offers an exceptional insight into the creative process in theater and film. He discusses his experiences working with the finest artists in cinema, such as Mel Brooks, Woody Allen, Sidney Poitier, and Richard Pryor, and explains how he developed his unique style from his early days at the Actors' Studio with Lee Strasberg.

Among other incidents, he describes his beloved stay in the United Kingdom, studying at the Old Vic Theatre School in Bristol. During this period, he was at the top of his class in fencing and visited Sir John Gielgud to explain the use of iambic pentameter to him.

Wilder shares humorously his failures in the romantic sphere (including 4 marriages) and is candid about his darker moments, such as the death of his third wife, comedian Gilda Radner, from cancer. He also reveals his own recent battle with illness, which he has now overcome, and which changed his perspective on life.

This book is not a traditional celebrity "exposé" but a glimpse into the life and mind of a great comedic actor who possesses a rare ability to write as well as he performs on stage.
