Vincent Gouzi knows Greece well. The book at hand has emerged from a contradiction he noticed early on, walking the streets and paths of the country, in its cities and the countryside: the contradiction between what he had heard, in France and Greece, about the low level of industrial development in this country and what he observed himself.
The result of long-term research, this book, which is based on his doctoral thesis, examines the evolution of Greek industry in the post-war period, focusing primarily on the recent crisis period, an area still unexplored. The study is primarily based on a thorough processing of statistical data. From this, the main trends and their turning points are accurately highlighted, as well as the similarities or differences with what was happening in other European countries.
In the crucial decades of industrial rise, as well as its decline and the final equilibrium we are now experiencing, from the 1950s until 2020, this external perspective helps us to see a little more calmly an issue that –often– in our Greek public discussion is almost emotionally charged. And to form a more balanced and useful image for the ongoing appraisal of the role of industry in our economic and social matters.
Until the 1970s, the development of industry in Greece embodied for the Greeks progress, Europe, modernity. However, in the 1970s, industry became invisible in the eyes of the Greeks and the rest of Europe. The paradox is not only explained by the fact that the share of services in the Greek economy has since reached unusually high levels. It is also explained by this silent revolution that makes industrial spaces less polluting, dematerializes processes and products, and favors cultural goods.
