The design of space, both urban and spatial planning, is now an established science and an institution with a particularly significant role in the era of environmental crisis and globalization. Both the act of designing and the professional field of urban planners and spatial planners serving it need a theoretical framework that interprets the often disappointing empirical reality.
This concern has occupied the author since the beginning of his career and has always been present in his academic and writing activities. The theory of design has become the subject of thought for an increasingly wider community of scholars on an international scale. The view that spatial design constitutes a horizontal link between all forms of politics has become so well established that the absence of a theoretical background represents an unacceptable deficiency, not to mention the scientific injustice it implies. The breadth of the subject and the knowledge that the "designer" of space now needs to harness is overwhelming.
This book aims to fill a gap in the Greek-language literature with a thorough presentation of the relevant theoretical currents. The author devoted considerable effort to familiarizing himself with the international literature, as well as with the significant, yet few, publications in the Greek language, to which he dedicated a separate chapter.
