Giorgis, the small orphan child who started from the mountainous Granitsa of Gortynia, wants to learn to read and yearns to one day be hung on the wall of the church alongside the icons.

He travels through monasteries, cities, colleges, and schools, and from a thirsty student becomes a worthy teacher and enlightened clergyman: Archimandrite Gervasios.
