Wilson's proposal, who also writes the introduction to the book, that in order to prevent the mass extinction of species, including humans, we must set aside about half of the planet's land and oceans for nature. National Geographic advocates for the protection of 30% of the oceans and 30% of the land by 2030, in harmony with the European Biodiversity Strategy.

In the preface to the Greek edition of the book, the author states: "This became clear with my visit to the marine areas of Greece. A few weeks ago, I dove in the waters of Hydra, in the Saronic Gulf, and the first fish I saw were a few trumpetfish and a school of rabbitfish from the Red Sea, but very few native fish species. The rabbitfish from the Red Sea, which feed on algae, have successfully invaded the eastern Mediterranean and have turned the rocky bottoms that were previously covered by diverse kelp forests into wastelands. Local fishermen helped the invaders spread due to overfishing of native predatory fish, such as groupers. Fishermen on the island of Amorgos in the Cyclades realized that they reached this point due to their own actions and asked the Greek government to designate three fully protected marine areas off their island. These fishermen know that if they are to continue to make a living from fishing, they need areas where marine life can recover, grow, and help replenish the adjacent waters where they can continue fishing. I am sure that the divers and the owners of the related shops will also be happy to have a richer marine life to observe."

The translators and editors of the Greek edition of the book are Panagiotis Dimitrakopoulos and Georgios Kokkoris (Professors in the Department of Environment and the Department of Oceanography and Marine Biosciences at the University of the Aegean, respectively), who accurately and sensitively translated the original text into Greek, making it accessible to the Greek reading public.
