The methodology of political cleavages aims at directly comparing the party systems of different countries. The central question of the research is whether left-wing parties today still represent working-class and poor social strata or have been "occupied" by the "rights-based" agenda of socially high-educated and high-income strata. In other words, how is it possible that in a time of intense income inequality, redistributive policy does not constitute a central issue in their politics?
The publication of the research in English did not include Greece. The covering of this gap coincided with the present edition. A separate chapter of the book analyzes the political cleavages in Greece from 1980 to 2019, while the Appendix provides a brief reference to the economic history of Greece since 1974.
