The unprovoked aggressive war of Russia against Ukraine, which has caused the largest forced displacement in Europe since World War II, has left eight million refugees and five million internally displaced persons. This fact has led Europe to seek a unified asylum and migration policy, with Greece looking for a management strategy that is effective and compliant with its international obligations.
The new standards in migration that followed the solidarity towards Ukraine, including temporary protection for the millions of individuals forced to leave their country, do not seem to apply to other cases of individuals fleeing from areas of armed conflict.
This book on the law of refugee protection and asylum seekers arises from the need to review the material, to include new legislation, and to critically present the legislative and jurisprudential developments in Europe and Greece. In particular, it examines relevant standards and case law at the level of the European Union, as well as the Council of Europe, including the developments in the case law of the relevant judicial bodies (CJEU and ECtHR) and the monitoring committees of organizations (ECRI, CPT, FRA).
It also analyzes specific Greek policies on issues of international protection, such as reception, asylum granting, integration, detention, returns, as well as cooperation with third countries and the search for substantial solidarity towards those who are forcibly and often massively displaced towards Europe.
