The Lily Flowers. Authors Arsinóe Tambakopoulou, Theoni Drakopoulou. The cover of the 1948 edition. Only the cover was in color, while it contains many images with black and white designs. The illustrations of the book were done by the caricaturist, reviewer, and songwriter Antonis Vottis, who also illustrated other school books. The book Lily Flowers was used in schools for fifteen years. Although it was a book from 1934, it was still taught during the period of the Civil War until 1950.
The book was written in the demotic language, as the educational laws agreed that this language should be used for the books of the early grades of elementary school. It contains stories that narrate, with immediacy and realism, events from everyday life in the city and the village with heroes who are peers of the young students. Mimi, Elenitsa, Kostakis, Lela, Katinitsa are characters in the narratives with whom the child-readers felt familiarity and could identify.
The narratives are usually told in the third person, but they often alternate with direct speech and dialogue, while the voice of the child-characters is also heard in the first person, giving the texts naturalness, liveliness, immediacy, and realism. We read texts that we also find in other readers, such as texts about the seasons, religious and folk celebrations, nature, flowers, animals, butterflies, professions, family, school, and children's games.
In addition to the stories, there are also poems thematically related to the stories, while the book begins, as is customary, with a prayer.
