The book "Silt Sand and Slurry" offers a visually rich exploration of the role silt plays in the future of America's coasts. Silt forms an invisible infrastructure that shapes and facilitates modern life. It is removed from the sea beds to deepen underwater passageways for container ships, channeled from rivers to control floods, and collected to reshape deltas, marshes, and beaches. The human factor now moves more silt annually compared to 'natural' geological processes, yet this global reshaping of the earth's surface is rarely discussed and is minimally understood.
Through four thematic text chapters, four geographical visual studies, and a concluding essay, the book highlights the significance of silt in the modern context of sea-level rise, environmental change, and spatial inequality, documenting the geography of excavation and silt across the four coasts of the continental United States. It examines the many constraints of current silt management practices, such as the short-term efforts to keep dynamic ecosystems from changing, the failure to assess silt as a resource, and the uneven decision-making process. Contrary to these conditions, the DRC proposes a design approach with silt that is adaptive, sound, and equitable.
