Description

The Battle of Belleau Wood holds a prominent place in the history of the United States Marine Corps, taking place between June 6 and 27, 1918. Its significance is undeniable, as indicated by the presence of a monument for the 4th (Marine) Brigade of the 2nd U.S. Division, as well as a preserved section of the forest located behind the Aisne-Marne Cemetery. This battle marked the Corps' first major engagement in Europe.

The battle came at the end of the third major German offensive of Spring 1918, which had started with impressive territorial gains but had almost stalled when the Marines were called to reinforce the French Commander. The purpose of the offensive was to prevent the Germans from breaking the French lines and advancing towards Paris, leading to a three-week fierce confrontation around Belleau Wood.

The battle is characterized by extreme ferocity with many attacks and counterattacks, as neither side was willing to yield even an inch of ground. Despite the local end of the offensive, the focus of the battle shifted to Villers Cotterêts. After capturing Belleau Wood, the neighboring community of Vaux was seized by the troops of the 2nd Brigade in a successful operation.

The memory of the battle has remained alive, particularly due to the preservation of a part of the battlefield, while interest in the wartime period has grown significantly in recent years. The battle is considered by many American sources as a decisive event in World War I and an iconic battle in the history of the Marine Corps.

This book differs from other guides on Belleau Wood as it includes many new notes and comprises a clear narrative that precedes the tour section. The reader will not only find points of interest within Belleau but also in the surrounding countryside. The book is lavishly illustrated with contemporary photographs and maps, while the narrative is supported by primary testimonies and many walking and driving tours.

This is the latest addition to the Battleground series of books by Maarten Otte concerning the American Expeditionary Forces, with many more in preparation. The execution of the AEF in the war is relatively unknown, and Belleau Wood is one of the rare engagements that continue to have an impact.
