Learn English with Matilda! A book from the Penguin Readers series. Discover fifteen famous adventures by Roald Dahl, adapted for English learners aged 7+. Can you read them all?

The Penguin Readers are a series of graded readers for learners of English as a foreign language. With simplified text, illustrations, and language exercises, the printed edition also includes instructions for accessing supportive online material.

In the Penguin Readers editions, Roald Dahl's stories have been aligned with the CEFR framework A1 to A2+, across four levels. Each book is also Lexile measured. The graded readers include illustrated new words, language activities, and fun games between chapters, encouraging students and teachers to structure learning and make real progress. Each book also includes projects and discussions.

Matilda, a Level 4 Reader, is A2+ in the CEFR framework. The text consists of sentences with up to three clauses, introducing more complex uses of the present perfect simple, passive voice, phrasal verbs, and simple relative clauses. It is well supported by illustrations, which appear regularly.

Matilda's parents don't understand her. Why does Matilda love to read and learn? Why doesn't she want to watch television? Matilda is a very special girl. At her new school, Matilda meets the terrifying teacher Miss Trunchbull, who is very mean to the children. But Matilda has a clever plan.
