For this purpose, they embalmed their dead and buried them in monuments along with all the objects necessary for the afterlife. The pharaohs created large funerary monuments with exquisite decoration. Since the 4th millennium BC, the inhabitants of the country used hieroglyphic writing. The difficulty in learning it (due to the large number of characters-symbols) required specialization and continuous engagement. A citizen had the opportunity to specialize as a scribe to pursue a career as a public official. Its decipherment is credited to the French Egyptologist J. Champollion, who in 1822 read the text of a trilingual inscription (the Rosetta Stone). The knowledge of hieroglyphic writing was crucial for a deeper understanding of the culture of the ancient Egyptians.
