Description & Specifications

The Underground Sea is a concise, urgent collection of writings from the archives of John Berger. It combines for the first time his work on mineworkers and miners' strikes and has been curated as a set of actions for today. The publication of The Underground Sea marks the 40th anniversary of the 1984-5 strike, at a time when people are rediscovering the need, power, and possibilities of collective action.

It includes excerpts and an audiovisual essay from the rarely shown BBC program, Germinal; interviews and the essay "Miners", which places itself at the heart of a mining village in Derby, depicting the everyday life of a typical mining community. Berger engages with the politics of testimony as he studies the work of miners and the broader community that is formed in service of this work. Reflecting on their provocativeness, he returns to Zola's novel for hope that "a new world is emerging underground. And when it comes, it will break the earth."
