Description & Specifications

Although composed of many different tribes and groups, the Celts shared a distinct culture that dominated much of Europe for centuries. They are known for their renowned reputation as fierce and brave warriors, skilled horsemen, and exceptional miners. In 390 BC, an alliance of Celtic tribes defeated a Roman army at the Allia River and proceeded to disgrace Rome, resulting in the Romans living under their threat. In the early third century BC, a Celtic army invaded Macedonia and Greece, won a significant victory at Thermopylae, and plundered the sacred site of Delphi. Their combat prowess was so strong that, when not fighting their own wars, they were sought after as mercenaries by many armies, even serving in Southern Egypt. When the Romans attacked Gaul (France and Belgium) and the British Isles, the Celtic armies fiercely resisted them.

Gabriele Esposito studies this fascinating martial culture, their armies, strategy, tactics, and equipment (they invented the horned saddle and the chain, while the British armies were the last in Europe to use chariots on the battlefield). Dozens of photographs from reenactments help bring these magnificent warriors back to life.
