Why did Papadiamantis name the collection of short stories that he failed to publish "Seaside Idyls"? Based on what European contexts is he compared to the Dutch painters? How is it possible—without even a single published book—to be a focal point of critical interest in his time?

What horizons of expectations have been applied to his work up to this day?...

Description

Description

Why did Papadiamantis name the collection of short stories that he failed to publish "Seaside Idyls"? Based on what European contexts is he compared to the Dutch painters? How is it possible—without even a single published book—to be a focal point of critical interest in his time?

What horizons of expectations have been applied to his work up to this day? And based on which ideological or aesthetic criteria has he been criticized or praised? To what extent does his work conform to the specifications of the ethnographic short story and how does it engage with the dominant discourse of his time?

These are some of the questions that the book attempts to answer. Starting from a different theoretical framework each time, it reexamines the evidence and aims to show that Papadiamantis, in his life and art, avoided submission to the specifications of a certain style, genre, language, or ideology.

Having a deep knowledge of Greek literature throughout its history, as well as European literature (a part of which he translated), he created a boundary work that constantly responds to new approaches, without allowing for the complacency of a single or definitive interpretation.
