This edition does not aim to provide all the words of the two-volume, 2,160-page work by Ioannis Zonaras: "Collection of Words, collected from various books of ancient and modern writing, as well as from this one from abroad". It includes part of the dictionary entries, as well as entries from earlier dictionaries. It does not attempt to provide their exhaustive interpretation, but it aspires to make the maximum percentage of this material known and at the same time to communicate "noble and gentle words and expressions" to the modern Greek world. The etymology and interpretation of the words reflect philological views of the 11th-12th centuries AD, and reading them today leads to the immediate realization of unintentional or intentional misinterpretations and distortions that occurred in later centuries. The author was a high-ranking official during the reign of Emperor Alexios I Komnenos. Later, he retired from his positions and spent the rest of his life writing books. The dictionary is one of the most important works in its genre, as it takes into account all previous dictionaries and etymologizes and interprets the words in a clear and convincing manner, in the vernacular language of his time, while presenting this material in such a way that it is useful to those studying ancient Greek writers or Christian literature. We hope that this edition will contribute to the understanding and use of the timeless Greek language as a single and unified language.
