Description

Description

This book is an attempt to review the relevant literature and research conducted internationally on the effects that changes in family structure have on the psychological development of both parents and their children.

Social changes have altered family structure and contributed to the formation of new types of families, such as nuclear, single-parent, blended, and same-sex families. The literature supports that it is not the type of family itself that creates difficulties for parents and children, but how adults emotionally manage various circumstances, as well as other practical or psychological issues that arise alongside the formation of the new family (e.g., financial problems, stress from the disruption of the family's usual way of life, inadequate support networks, increased responsibilities, or psychological difficulties such as sadness, anger, insecurity).

The conclusions of this work highlight the necessity of designing preventive programs aimed at parents in order to facilitate their transition to the new situation and their adjustment, and to promote the quality of the relationship between children and their parents to the greatest possible extent.

The design of relevant programs will contribute to ensuring a positive climate at the level of partnership-parenting relationships and to creating a safe environment for children facing destabilization in their family setting, thereby promoting the mental health of all members of the family unit.
