"Towards the Abyss" offers an analytical exploration of a decade of war and turmoil in Ukraine. Volodymyr Ishchenko is one of the most important leftist commentators in Ukraine since 2014, when pro-European protesters overthrew the government in Kyiv, Russia annexed Crimea, and pro-Russian separatists seized parts of Donbas. One of his first thoughts as he read the news of the Russian invasion on February 24, 2022, was that regardless of how the war ends, he will no longer have a homeland. Ishchenko argues that the conflict taking place in Ukraine with tanks, artillery, and rockets is the same conflict that is being suppressed with police batons in Belarus and Russia. The intensity of the post-Soviet crisis - the inability of an oligarchic ruling class in the regions of the former Soviet Union to maintain political or moral leadership - is the root of escalating violence.
