The Latin name of the herb is Cassia angustifolia (Narrow-leaved Cassia) or Cassia senna (Senna Cassia). It belongs to the family of Leguminosae. It is found under the names Senna, Cassia, Sinamiki, Alexandria leaves, or Egyptian leaves.

It is considered an effective herb for addressing constipation. It acts quickly and does not irritate the intestine. The leaves and pods contain sennosides, a natural active ingredient that stimulates motility mainly of the large intestine and regulates its function.

Senna may cause mild abdominal discomfort (cramps).

It is not recommended for prolonged use as a laxative, as it may affect the balance of water and electrolytes. Senna should not be taken by individuals with intestinal obstruction (ileus) or with undiagnosed abdominal symptoms.
