The conclusion that easily emerges from the study of this book is that Thucydides' Funeral Oration served as a melting pot of ideological confrontations, which in turn reflected the intense political and social struggles of ancient Greek society in the 5th century BC.
However, through the text of the Funeral Oration, the echo of these struggles, which shaped the developments of their time in such a way that even today the formation of the Athenian political system serves as a reference point and subject of study, is not easily perceivable.
We believe that the choices of the creator of the Funeral Oration are the result of deliberate action. His aim is to soften the contrasts, bridge the gaps, and harmoniously couple ideologies that – on a first approach – constitute contradictory intellectual constructs.
The dynamic composition of both traditional and modern elements in this text provides the necessary ideological foundation for realizing the hegemonic politics of the democratic city of Athens, through the "legitimization" of the doctrine of the supremacy of the strong at every level.
