The art of craftsmanship with Damascus steel has a history of thousands of years. Items made of steel or iron are decorated with engraved patterns, while a thin sheet of gold is placed over the design and deepened into the material with the help of a small hammer. The object is heated to about 800°C so that the steel surfaces oxidize and turn black, while the gold begins to shine.
This technique was transferred to Spain by the Arabs and perfected in the famous city of Toledo. In 1931, Pelikan adopted this method for the Toledo model, which has remained almost unchanged since then. The decorative casing is made from a piece of Sterling silver, carefully treated in various stages before being covered with gold.
Each Toledo pen is a unique piece manufactured in Germany, with tiny engravings in the pattern that are handmade. Due to limited production volume, no more than 200 pieces are created each month. The cap and both ends are made from high-quality black resin.
