Lucian, the renowned rhetorician and writer, who "made mockery his profession," as it has been said of him, was born in Samosata of Commagene in 120 A.D. He did not learn Greek in the embrace of his mother, but at school, through books.
This, however, did not prevent him from becoming an exceptional rhetorician and maintaining a balance in his speech between purity of language and vulgarity. His incredibly appealing linguistic style, his sharp wit, and his unparalleled spirit of mockery make him immensely popular even today, just as during the years of the Antonines.
Through his works, he presents us with a vivid picture of his time, often viewed through a relentlessly satirical lens, while also serving as a significant source for certain aspects of life in the 2nd century.
Above all, however, he does not cease to show us the way to the true essence of Greek education, beyond any exaggeration and extreme rhetoric.
