Description

Description

Study of the frescoes of the katholikon of the Monastery of the Forty Martyrs in Sparta. This work is by the painter Georgios Moschos and dates back to 1620. The author writes about the history of the Monastery, the architectural style of the church, and then describes the frescoes.

It examines the iconography of each scene separately and the iconographic program of the entire decoration of the church. The text concludes with a study of the painting technique of the katholikon. The Monastery of the Forty Martyrs is one of the most important religious centers in Laconia.

The frescoes of the katholikon are dated with a founder's inscription from the year 1620 and are the work of the painter Georgios Moschos from Nafplio. The iconographic program is particularly rich and includes the illustration of the majority of the Divine Liturgy that takes place throughout the ecclesiastical year.

From the selection of scenes, their placement in the church, and the iconographic details in the scenes, one can ascertain the relationship of the program to the teaching of Hesychasm, which connects it to the activities of the scholarly bishop of Brethen, Parthenius.

The stylistic rendering of the forms and details observed in the composition of the scenes further demonstrate the painter's exceptional abilities, as well as the uninterrupted continuity of the artistic tradition from antiquity to modern times.
