'Rashömon' and 'In a Bamboo Grove' have inspired Kurosawa's magnificent film and depict a past where morality is upended. Stories such as 'The Nose', 'O-Gin', and 'Loyalty' sketch a rich and fantastical image of a medieval Japan filled with shoguns and priests, beggars and farmers. In his later works like 'Death Register', 'The Life of a Stupid Man', and 'Spinning Gears', Akutagawa draws from his own life with devastating effect, revealing his intense melancholy and the terror of madness in exceedingly poignant impressionistic tales.
