«Marvelous... a remarkable work of study» - Bookanista

In 1939, the Gestapo created a list of names: the British whose removal would be the Nazis' top priority in the event of a successful invasion. Who were they? What had they done to provoke Germany? For the first time, historian Sybil Oldfield reveals their stories and uncovers why the Nazis feared their influence.

Those included in the target list - over half of them were actually refugees - were many of Britain's most talented and humanitarian residents. Among them we find writers E. M. Forster and Virginia Woolf, humanitarians and religious leaders, scientists and artists, social reformers Margery Fry and Eleanor Rathbone MP, artists Jacob Epstein and Oscar Kokoschka.

By examining these targets of Nazi hatred, Oldfield not only sheds light on the Gestapo's worldview but also reveals a network of truly exceptional Britons: witnesses, moral visionaries, and unsung heroes.
