Colostomy in general: A stoma is the surgical creation of an artificial passage from an organ to the external environment. There are various types of stomas. Most stomas are performed to drain the body's excretions through the abdominal wall.

There are three categories of abdominal stomas:

  • Colostomy is the alteration of the path of the large intestine. It may be temporary or permanent.
  • Ileostomy is a similar diversion in the ileum (that is, the final section of the small intestine).
  • Urinary diversion is the term that encompasses all surgical procedures in which new passages for urine exit are created from the body.

The colostomy is the most common form of stoma. It is performed on patients with cancer in the abdomen or pelvis, which infiltrates the large intestine. During the surgical procedure, a section of the large intestine is removed, and the distal end of the intestine is redirected to the abdominal wall, where it is sutured to form the stoma.
