Description & Specifications

As a musical genre, the Smyrnaic music during its period of great flourishing, from 1850 until 1922, significantly influences both the islands of the Aegean Sea and the major cities of mainland Greece. It is integrated into the broader Eastern Mediterranean region, extending from the Balkans to the Middle East, and contains important influences from both the East and Western Europe. Notably, many groups of musicians and singers from various ethnicities (Greeks, Turks, Armenians, Jews, Arabs, and Europeans) collaborated and exchanged ideas over a span of more than 70 years, possibly creating the most important and characteristic Greek musical genre, called the "Smyrnaic" song.

In this book, the author outlines the social and historical context of Smyrna during the time when the Smyrna Music School appeared and a new musical genre, Rebetiko, emerged. He draws from the works of prominent Greek and foreign writers, musicologists, journalists, and researchers of the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as from written and oral testimonies of refugees from 1922, and from the first professional recordings made in Smyrna and Istanbul from 1905 to 1922.

It takes us on a journey from Smyrna’s Efstoudianída, to the "café aman," the musical ensembles, Rebetiko, censorship, and suppression. The book also includes photographic material from the era, biographies of prominent figures in Smyrnaic and Rebetiko music, as well as sheet music and lyrics of traditional Smyrnaic and Constantinopolitan songs. The preface is by Panagiotis Kounadis, and at the end of the book, transcribed interviews are presented with the historian Lefteris Papakostas and the renowned musician Babis Tsertos.
