Inevitably, the research weight of this editorial work primarily rests on the explicit notice of the anonymous author “in plain terms,” that is, on the linguistic essence of his undertaking. However, this literary significance or even bias not only does not undermine but rather highlights in its own way the purely theological value of the text, which, beyond the given and timeless prestige of the meeting of two “greats,” the biographer St. Athanasius and the subject of the biography St. Anthony, with the mediation of the purposefully anonymous translator, serves as a lucid testimony of the thematic choices and expressive modes of post-Byzantine hagiographical literature.
