Description

Description

It is a story that waited 80 years to be told. The "ADRIAS," the legendary Greek destroyer of World War II, had a Captain who defied fear, a Chief Engineer who became the deus ex machina for the salvation of the ship, a doctor without instruments who saved dozens of severely wounded, exemplary leaders among the officers, and sailors who competed in courage. They could be heroes in a fictional movie. But they are real individuals who drew superhuman strength from their love for their homeland.

The "ADRIAS," a newly built destroyer lent by the British to the exiled Greek Navy, participated in the Dodecanese Operation in 1943. After striking a German mine near Kalymnos, which severed the bow of the ship, her crew managed to steer it to the shores of neutral Turkey, without compasses, maps, and an anchor. And from there - after makeshift repairs - they made a journey of 730 miles with their battered vessel to the port of Alexandria, where they entered as victors. They were all heroes. And this is the account of such a unique feat in naval history, which seems lifted from imagination.
