This book captures an important aspect of the 3rd Hellenic Republic: all national electoral contests of the post-junta period 1974-2023. The central core and basis of the present volume consist of 17 podcasts, discussions with important interlocutors, academics, specialists in political science, communication, history, and journalism, knowledgeable about each electoral contest and the corresponding historical period that each one addresses.
The idea for the creation of this digital archive of discussions and the subsequent publication of the book arose after lengthy discussions between the two editors and the late emeritus professor of the University of Athens, Elias Nikolakopoulos, who was also the scientific supervisor of the series. Elias Nikolakopoulos, a deep expert in the electoral history of the country, aimed to trace the political journey of the last 50 years through the documentation of electoral contests, to comprehensively analyze the situation prevailing at each period within the parties, to identify the causes that led to victories or defeats, and to illuminate the faces, the protagonists, the winners and the losers of these contests.
The texts of this volume highlight the particularities of each electoral battle, the points of contact, the role of the international situation, the parties' agendas, and, of course, the electoral geography and behavior, the way citizens voted. The exploration of all these electoral contests is also a way for us to try to find an answer to the question: What is, ultimately, the Metapolitefsi?
Above all, it is Democracy, parliamentarism, the resolution of the political issue that plagued the country for decades, the European path, the improvement of living standards. However, it is also a clientelistic state, populism, conservative guilds, large and small interests, bankruptcy and memoranda. A history of great achievements but also great contradictions. A period that is positively assessed by citizens, despite the systematic, with different starting points and ambitions, attempts to undermine the Metapolitefsi and its accomplishments, which intensified during the economic crisis and continues in waves to this day.
