In 1970, Lionel Trilling (1905-1975), a leading critic of the 20th century, explored "the related ideals of honesty and authenticity from a historical perspective" in six lectures he delivered at Harvard.
These lectures were published in revised form in 1972 and became his last book. "Sometimes," Trilling writes, "we can observe the moral life in the process of its self-revision." The author addresses this kind of transformation in this book: the process, on the one hand, in which the arduous endeavor of honesty, of being true to oneself, has assumed the highest importance in moral life; and on the other hand, the further change when the position of honesty has now been usurped by the darker and even more persistent modern ideal of authenticity.
Trilling provides examples from the entire Western literature and thought, from Shakespeare to Hegel and Sartre, from Robespierre to R. D. Laing, pointing out the contradictions and ironies that the ideals of honesty and authenticity generate.
Honesty and Authenticity is now considered a small masterpiece and serves as the best introduction to Trilling's work.
