General information about tracheostomy:

A tracheostomy tube is a special tube that is placed after the opening of the trachea (tracheostomy), to ventilate the patient, bypassing the upper respiratory tract. The reasons that may require it vary. A tracheostomy can be performed urgently in any location or scheduled in the operating room. A tracheostomy can be temporary or permanent, such as in laryngectomy. As long as the opening remains open, breathing is mainly conducted through it.

Indications for tracheostomy:

  • In obstruction of the upper respiratory tract (e.g., laryngeal edema).
  • When there is severe trauma to the larynx.
  • In radical surgeries of the thyroid or pharynx and upper esophagus.
  • In patients who need prolonged respiratory support.
  • In cases difficult to disconnect from the ventilator.
  • Neurological syndromes.
  • In polytrauma or burns.
  • In disorders of chest mechanics.
