Hypodermic needles are one of the categories of medical tools that enter the skin and are called sharp objects. They are a very thin, hollow tube with a sharp tip that contains a small opening at the pointed end. They are usually used with a syringe, a manual device with a plunger, for injecting substances into the body (e.g. saline solution, solutions containing various drugs or liquid medicines) or extracting fluids from the body (e.g. blood). They are used to collect fluid samples from the body, for example by taking blood from a vein during venipuncture.
A hypodermic needle is used for the rapid delivery of fluids or when the injected substance cannot be swallowed, either because it will not be absorbed (as with insulin), or because it would harm the liver. There are many possible routes for injection, with the arm being a common site.

Hypodermic needles are usually used by medical professionals (dentists, phlebotomists, doctors, nurses, paramedics), but are sometimes used by patients themselves. This is most common for type 1 diabetics, who may require several insulin injections per day. It also occurs in patients with asthma or other severe allergies. These patients may need to take desensitization injections or may need to carry injectable medications to use as first aid in case of a severe allergic reaction.

In the latter case, these patients often carry a syringe loaded with epinephrine (e.g. EpiPen), diphenhydramine (e.g. Benadryl), or dexamethasone. The rapid injection of one of these drugs can stop a severe allergic reaction.
