Endymion Wilkinson's book, Chinese History: A New Manual, is one of the most recognizable works in the history of China and has been continuously published for fifty years. The author has expanded its scope with each new edition, transforming the original guide to research imperial China's history into an encyclopedic, 1.7 million-word introduction to Chinese cultural heritage. The Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres (France) awarded the third edition with the Stanislas Julien prize, and in 2016, Peking University Press published the full edition in three volumes in Chinese. The sixth edition has been revised and expanded with the latest developments in digital tools and the dozens of related sciences necessary for the study of China's history. Additionally, its chronological coverage has been extended to the death of Chairman Mao. The expanded sixth edition consists of two volumes. Volume 1 covers topics from Language, Education, and Arts to Science, Technology, and the Environment. Volume 2 presents primary and secondary information sources chronologically from the Neolithic period to 1976.
