Description & Specifications

An immersive novel with elements of time leap from the author of Treacle Walker, which was shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 2022. Here, John Turner finds himself stranded in a fierce snowstorm one night around 1755. In the snow where he was found dead, there was the imprint of a woman's shoe. Thus reads a mysterious memorial plaque, high on the bank of a prehistoric path in the Pennines of Cheshire, a mystery that still lives on in the surrounding farms. John Turner was a carrier. With his caravan of horses, he transported salt and silk, traveling distances unimaginable to his community. He brought ideas as well as gifts, from market to market, from regions as distant as the fires of the Silk Road.

In the 21st century, two hundred and fifty years after John's life, the world of Ian and Sal resonates with the echo of John's death. One day, walking in solitude, they pass between time and find themselves lost somewhere between the lost world of Jack and their own. This poetic, imaginary novel is a nostalgic capture of the lives and language of all those called to the valley of Thursbitch.
