Description & Specifications

In the mass protests that followed the police killing of George Floyd, almost every major consumer brand declared its commitment against racism, often with new ads accompanying their Tweets. Despite the historic scale of the protests and the endorsement of the ruling class, the most substantial reforms proposed by Black Lives Matter remained out of reach. Even less was accomplished regarding policies that could assist the most isolated and precarious Americans. Why has the anti-racist mobilization been so strong, yet with such poor results in building political resistance capable of winning significant reforms? The author points out, contrary to popular left-wing sentiments, the need for broad left-wing politics as the only viable solution to eliminate the twin crises of racial inequality and police violence. Redistribution, public goods, and multi-ethnic working-class solidarity are the only sustainable reactions to the atrocities of police violence and mass incarceration. By fighting against the conditions that make crime and violence inevitable, we can also build a working-class majority and a more equal and peaceful country.
